Before Dawn for the Daily Wage

Mother and Son on the Fishing Boat for Longlines

Report by Marianna Chalatsi

Nikos Nikolaou, based in northern Evia, goes out to sea almost daily, as long as the weather permits, to cast his longlines. He has been a professional fisherman since the age of 18, one of the youngest fishermen in Greece. He fishes in the Sporades, primarily around Skiathos and Skopelos, specializing in longline fishing for bream and snapper.

Alongside him on the fishing boat is his mother, Evangelia Stavroula, who has been helping for many years, having gained valuable experience over time, and now assists her son.

Nikos started fishing from a young age with his father, learning the craft as a family tradition. At just 20 years old, he decided to continue his father’s profession and acquired his own fishing boat. Despite his youth, he became one of the youngest licensed fishermen in the region and has since built a reputation for his skills.

Every day, before dawn, Nikos heads out to sea. By 3 a.m., he is already preparing his boat and his gear. His mother joins him, and together, they set out from Skiathos or Evia towards the fishing spots in the Sporades, where they lay their longlines at the depths where the bream and snapper are found. The fishing itself requires great patience, experience, and understanding of the sea, as it takes several hours before the catch is ready to be retrieved.

The workday begins long before sunrise and can last up to 20 hours. By early morning, the fish are usually caught, and Nikos begins the process of retrieving the longlines, hoping for a good catch. On a good day, the yield can be around 200 kg of fish, while on slower days, it can be much less. The fish, mostly bream and snapper, are sold to local fishmongers in Skiathos or directly to customers. The size and quality of the fish can vary, but prices remain stable, providing a steady income for the family.

The day’s earnings, however, are shared between mother and son, as expenses are also high. The cost of fuel alone for the boat can reach up to 80-100 euros per day, while the bait for the longlines is another significant cost. Despite the challenges, both mother and son remain dedicated to their craft, believing in the tradition and the future of fishing in the region.

Evangelia says that she will continue to help her son as long as she can. Fishing has always been a family affair, and they plan to keep it that way. They wake up before dawn, ready to tackle the sea, hoping for a good catch each day…
